How to calculate the concentration of CBD ?

The concentration of CBD depends on each product. However please note that 1 gram equals to 1000 milligrams. Therefore, a 20% CBD oil (example: Hemp Oil 600), means that there is 20% cannabidiol (CBD) per 1000 mg. 200 mg is the amount of CBD per gram if the CBD oil is 20%.

A dosage of 1 ml of CBD oil at 20% equals about 10 mg of CBD. So someone who consumes 2 ml of 20% CBD per day consumes a total of about 20 mg per day.

A small 60ml bottle of 20% CBD (example: Hemp Oil 600) contains a total of approximately 600mg of CBD. So if you consume a total of 20 mg of CBD oil a day, your bottle will last 30 days.

However there is currently no official standard in the industry for calculating the total CBD of a cannabis product. Different manufacturers, laboratories and suppliers calculate it in different ways. If you are a consumer of CBD, the main important data to know is the  % of CBD contained in the product. It is also suggested to start with a small dose and gradually increase the doses until you find the amount that fits your need and your situation.

* The dosage of CBD for medical conditions is often expressed in milligrams.

How does CBD work in the body?

The human nervous system contains a large number of receptors. One of the receiving systems is the endocannabinoid system (ECS). These receptors are located in the human brain and in the peripheral nervous system (spinal cord and nerves). In the brain, receptors reside in areas responsible for perception, concentration, memory, and movement. This is why ECS is involved in the regulation of many physiological processes, including the feeling of pain, mood and appetite.

ECS receptors bind cannabinoid-like molecules produced by the nervous system (endorphins). CBD binds to the same receptors as psychoactive THC but has an opposite effect and is non-psychoactive. CBD can slow down the nervous system.

Difference between CBD and THC

THC and CBD are the two main cannabinoids found in cannabis. THC is responsible for the sensation of “high” after cannabis use. CBD has no psychoactive effect. The effects of CBD are not felt in the psyche but more in terms of body perceptions.

To summarize, CBD has no intoxicant effect whereas THC is widely used for its recreational effects and as a medical alternative to certain health problems. THC can cause anxiety when consumed in high doses, while CBD appears to have the opposite effect.

THC is the most popular cannabinoid and the largest one in cannabis. The main existing cannabis strains (Sativa and Indica) were cultivated and selected for their high concentration of THC. Its psychoactive effects produce a rapid euphoria. THC can be used to fight nausea, sleep disturbances and loss of appetite. When consumed in high doses, it can cause anxiety and paranoia. It is important to consult a doctor and to respect the laws in force in Quebec for the consumption of Cannabis Médical.

CBD is a non-psychoactive substance that can be consumed without side effects, and without feeling “high”. CBD can produce calming effects and is often sought after by people suffering from anxiety or loss of sleep. It also lowers blood sugar levels and has shown promise for people battling pain, multiple sclerosis and epilepsy.

More technically, THC and CBD do not act on the same types of cannabinoid receptors. Thus, THC binds to CB1 and CB2 receptors and CBD binds to serotonin and adenosine instead.

CB1 and CB2 receptors: They are localized in the central nervous system and the immune system. Their role is the management of the transfer of neurotransmitters and those of the balance of bodily functions. They influence certain feelings such as pleasure, appetite, memory and pain.
